Unlike standard hard vinyl injection molding, sofubi uses rotocasting — liquid vinyl is poured into a mold that rotates inside a heated oven, creating a hollow figure with even wall thickness. The result is a distinctive matte texture, a slight give when squeezed, and a warm, organic hand-feel that hard plastic cannot replicate. Sofubi also allows for more complex sculptural forms since the flexible mold can release undercuts that would trap a rigid part. A complex multi-part articulated action figure with interchangeable accessories may require $3,000–8,000 in tooling across multiple molds. We provide a detailed mold cost breakdown during the design review phase — no surprises. All molds are CNC-machined steel, stored in our secured vault, and contractually owned by you. The mold cost is a one-time investment; there are no recurring mold maintenance or storage fees. For Kickstarter creators, we offer a mold-cost-deferral option: pay 50% upfront and 50% from your campaign proceeds.

Every painter trains on your specific reference art before touching production units. Each unit passes through a D65 light booth for color verification against your approved master sample. IP protection is foundational to our business model — we cannot serve the designer toy community without it. Our standard contract includes: (1) full IP retention — you own all rights to your character designs, sculpts, and original artwork; (2) tooling ownership — every mold is contractually yours, stored in a locked, camera-monitored vault accessible only to your assigned project manager; (3) non-disclosure — every employee who touches your project signs an NDA specific to your brand; (4) non-compete — we will never produce a similar figure for another client using your tooling or design data; (5) data delivery — at project close, all CAD files, paint master samples, and production documentation are delivered to you. Every order ships with complete compliance documentation at no extra charge.
